Synopsis:
Sloane knows better than to cry in front of anyone. With suicide now an international epidemic, one outburst could land her in The Program, the only proven course of treatment. Sloane’s parents have already lost one child; Sloane knows they’ll do anything to keep her alive. She also knows that everyone who’s been through The Program returns as a blank slate. Because their depression is gone—but so are their memories.

The Program is an intense and heartbreaking story that comes closer to our life than all the dystopian books I've read.
With most dystopian books you don't really see the story play out in our world in at least 100 years. For example: what happens in the Hunger Games will probably never happen, and if it does it will take at least a hundred years to get there. But then you have the Program which I feel can happen to our world within decades. Because of this the Program had a big impact on me, which I think is really good.

The plot of the Program was a lot sadder than I thought it would be. I had to constantly take reading breaks because otherwise the plot would make me way to sad. The fact that it is so sad isn't bad, it made read the book a little slower than normal, but it also gave the story a lot more meaning.
You get a lot of flashbacks in this story, which I normally am not a big fan of. I feel like flashback slow down the plot in most books, but in this story they were really well done. They never slowed down the story for me. The flashbacks in this story were always very powerful, and, a lot of the times, very sad.

Over the course of the story I grew attached to the characters. I think this happened mostly because I felt so sorry for what they were going through.
The characters in this story felt very realistic. I would've dealt with a lot of the situations the same way they dealt with them and the emotions they showed were very pure.
I loved that in the beginning our protagonist, Sloane, already had a boyfriend and that she never turned away throughout the whole story. You barley ever see that in YA books and I really liked that small change from most of the YA books I read.

Overall I think this was a great story that is put together in a beautiful way. I really recommend the Program if you want a thought provoking dystopian novel. I warn you though, don't read this book when you're not ready for a lot of sadness.
